Providers to compete for free $32K mammography system

By Chelsey Ledue

A vendor of on-demand digital publishing solutions and a software development firm have announced a contest in which they will donate two mammography systems to hospitals, clinics or imaging centers that perform digital mammograms.

Rimage and DatCard Systems will donate the MammoSmart System, valued between $16,995 and $32,000.

The MammoSmart System gives patients their complete mammography history and breast care information on an automatically produced CD or DVD. The system also allows facilities to customize the CDs and DVDs, enabling them to determine what information is of most value.

The system also aims to help hospitals and imaging centers to provide better communication, and meet the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) on patient education.

The vendors are touting MammoSmart's ability to reduce overhead costs by converting providers' imaging procedures to digital. Film costs about $2 per sheet and multiple sheets can be printed for each patient during an appointment, according to Jessica Tuohy, a sales associate for DatCard. A CD with the same information will run at about 30 cents.

"(The) beauty of MammoSmart is facilities can now provide all breast health patients with comprehensive, yet personalized medical information on disc, replacing dozens of printed handouts and reducing consultation times," said Andrew Rosenzweig, vice president of sales and marketing at DatCard Systems.

The deadline for contest entries is January 31, 2008. Finalists will be announced in February and winners in March.
