Inside the minds of pharmacists in 2009

By Richard Pizzi

The American Pharmacists’ Association, or APhA, is the largest association of pharmacists in the United States. What did they think were the top news stories of 2009?

Like those of us with our eyes on healthcare finance issues, the pharmacists tagged topics such as healthcare reform, medical homes and the prominent role of healthcare information technology in the federal economic stimulus package.

However, the APhA also highlights issues that – while seemingly their own – should also attract the notice of healthcare finance officials. Here’s their complete list:

  1. Healthcare Reform
  2. A/H1N1 Influenza (“Swine flu”)
  3. Medication Therapy Management
  4. The Role of Pharmacists in Medical Homes
  5. Pharmacogenomics
  6. The Benefits of Vitamin D
  7. Public Worries About Vaccines
  8. Medication Safety & the FDA
  9. New Blockbuster Drug Approvals
  10. Healthcare Information Technology

See the APhA web site for their pharmacy-oriented assessment of each topic.
