8 critical success factors for ICD-10

By Tom Sullivan , Editor-in-Chief, Healthcare IT News

The latest firm to share ICD-10 tactics, HCL Technologies on Tuesday discussed what it considers to be eight of the most important.

In a Webinar, ICD-9 to ICD-10: Critical Success Factors to Complete a Transparent Transition, HCL's director of payor solutions Frank Balco explained that with healthcare reform and the “unfunded mandates” HIPAA 5010 and ICD-10, the U.S. healthcare industry is undergoing its largest change in history. And, so, here are HCL's tips:

1 Analysis and discovery
2 Multiple levels of training
3 ICD-9 to ICD-10 crosswalks
4 Vendor software integration
5 Provider contracting modifications
6 Adjudication system modifications
7 Statistically valid testing of payers' own data
8 Reduce claim processing exceptions

Asked after the presentation whether HCL recommends that healthcare organizations opt for full-remediation or the seemingly easier route of crosswalks, Balco answered that ICD-10 is “probably going to come to down to full-remediation at some point in time.”
