Medical coders have a strong incentive for mastering ICD-10 coding. Physicians not so much.
Ken Bradley, vice president of strategic planning at Navicure, released the whitepaper, "Engaging Physicians in ICD-10: Strategies for Practice Administrators." In it he discusses obstacles that could prevent physicians from embracing ICD-10 training. Time constraints, resistance to change and lack of understanding will get in the way.
A key strategy would be flexibility. Create a training plan that accommodates different physicians' learning styles.
For those of you eager to master ICD-10 coding, here are three examples to help:
- ICD-10-PCS body system, body part: They both sound so simple!: What you need to know about the second and fourth characters. (ICD-10 Trainer)
- Get to know ICD-10 codes for wrist and hand conditions: carpal tunnel is only the start of this hypothetical patient's problems. (ICD-10 Trainer)
- Is ICD-10 Giving You F41.0 (Panic Attacks?): Panic disorder [episodic paroxysmal anxiety] without agoraphobia. (Coder Coach: Code for the Day)
This is a weekly feature that I use to highlight practical tips on how to use and understand ICD-10-CM/PCS codes. Please let me know of any other sources that I can include.
