Enrollment in Medicaid and CHIP has grown by nearly 17 million people since the Affordable Care Act was enacted, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

CMS compared enrollment data from October 2016 to July through September 2013, the period before the start of the first marketplace open enrollment in October 2013.

From September to October, enrollment increased by 45,279 among the 50 states and District of Columbia that reported data.

The October report measures eligibility and enrollment activity for the entirety of the Medicaid and CHIP programs in all states, including those states that have not yet chosen to adopt the new low-income adult group established by the Affordable Care Act.

As of October, 68 million individuals were enrolled in Medicaid and 5 million in CHIP.

Among the 48 states reporting both total Medicaid and CHIP enrollment and child enrollment data for the current period, total enrollment is comprised of 51 percent Medicaid child and CHIP enrollment and 49 percent Medicaid adult enrollment, CMS said.
