Open enrollment for week 11 ended with close to 400,000 consumers signing up for healthcare coverage, a number four times greater than the week before, according to figures from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Plan selections from Jan. 10-16 totaled 399,885. However, with cancellations, the net plan selection total was 153,631, CMS said.

Cancellations were by and large insurer-initiated cancellations of returning consumers who were automatically enrolled for 2016 but actually had their policies terminated at the end of 2015, CMS said.

The figures are similar to the same week during last year's open enrollment period, CMS said.

During week 10, enrollment momentum lagged, with less than 75,000 consumers signing up from Jan. 3-9. The week prior, 83,297 consumers got coverage through Healthcare.gov, according to CMS.

Friday, Jan. 15, was the last day to enroll or change plans for new coverage to start February 1. Open enrollment ends on January 31.

"As expected, consumer interest is beginning to increase again as we near the deadline for 2016 coverage," HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said.

Those not enrolling in health insurance plan by January 31 can't enroll this year unless they qualify for a special enrollment period.

Enrollments or changes between January 16 and 31 take effect March 1, CMS said.

Since November 1 when open enrollment began, 8.8 million consumers have gotten coverage, with most enrolling from the 38 states using the federal marketplace.
