San Antonio-based Baptist Health System said it has broken ground on a new $50 million facility to house its orthopedic services department.

The 77,000-square-foot building will be housed at the North Central Baptist Hospital and act as its hub for treatments including joint replacement, rehabilitating sports injuries, arthroscopic surgery and spine treatment.

Funding details were not released.

According to officials, the facility will have a hotel-like design, a trend in new medical facility design that is popping up in more development projects as patient experience becomes even more important to providers. It will feature a 15-bed post-anesthesia care unit, 10 operation and recovery rooms and a 30-bed inpatient unit.

The center is slated to open in 2016.
