Blue Island hospital seeks to boost operational turnaround

By Molly Merrill

MetroSouth Medical Center - the new name for St. Francis Hospital & Health Center, which was acquired in July by MSMC Investors - will deploy a surgical information system at its hospital in Blue Island, Ill., to boost operational turnaround.

The 410-bed acute-care hospital chose Alpharetta, Ga-based Surgical Information Systems as its perioperative software provider.

MSMC officials said SIS' Rules-Based Charging (RBC), an HFMA peer-reviewed financial system, factored heavily in the decision.

"MetroSouth Medical Center is a top-tier medical facility with exceptional physicians, nurse and staff," said MSMC Chief Information Officer John Ulett. "We wanted an OR system and partner that was equally first-rate and, after evaluating several other systems, found it with SIS and its integrated solution. Their specialized tools will enhance nurse and physician satisfaction and overall perioperative effectiveness while also increasing revenues via their innovative Rules-Based Charging."

SIS' RBC program uses 14 variables to trigger charge capture and calculates charge amounts based on a number of different algorithms, including varying OR time increments, flat rate, anesthesia type, procedure and implants.

SIS CEO Ed Daihl said RBC is the perfect tool for hospitals seeking clinical, financial and operational turnarounds.

"The system captures charge information as an automatic by-product of the clinical process and submits it electronically to the billing department," said Daihl. "As the only HFMA peer-reviewed perioperative product, we have proved that SIS Rules-Based Charging not only improves reimbursements, but also frees up significant time for clinicians so that they can concentrate more fully on the health and safety of their patients."
