Seventeen nonprofits across California will receive $7.7 million in grants from the Blue Shield of California Foundation.
The foundation will award $2.7 million to support the healthcare safety net and healthcare reform, $4 million to information technology, and $1 million toward efforts to reduce domestic violence.
"We are making significant investments to support innovation across California that improves lives by strengthening the safety net, improving healthcare quality, and reducing teen dating violence," said Crystal Hayling, BSCF president and CEO.
Highlights of the awards include:
- $1.8 million to the University of California, San Francisco to implement the second year of BSCF's signature program - the Clinic Leadership Institute
- $1.5 million to the California Health Care Safety Net Institute, to develop and implement a model program for e-prescribing in four public hospitals.
- $1 million to the University of California, Berkeley, to conduct an evaluation of BSCF's California Healthcare-Associated Infection Prevention Initiative, which uses data mining technology.
- $324,000 to the California Women's Law Center in Los Angeles to fund a program that trains rural school districts on domestic violence in teen couples
- $550,000 to the Pacific Business Group on Health of San Francisco to improve care among patients with chronic conditions. Another $350,000 will go to Contra Costa Health Services for a new chronic disease management system targeting diabetes, pediatric obesity and mammogram screenings.
Blue Shield of California Foundation is one of the largest healthcare grant-making organizations in California.
