The board of directors of the Boston-based Partners Healthcare system has named Brigham and Women’s Hospital President Gary L. Gottlieb, MD, as its next president and CEO.
Gottlieb, who assumes the CEO duties in January 2010, will be the fourth Partners CEO since the organization was founded in 1994.
Gottlieb will succeed the retiring James J. Mongan, MD, who has led Partners since 2003. Between 1996 and 2003, Mongan was president of Massachusetts General Hospital.
“Dr. Gottlieb has brought his immense talent and leadership to every facet of the Partners organization – and to the greater Boston community,” said Jack Connors, Jr., chairman of the Partners board of directors.
Gottlieb has held a number of senior leadership positions since he joined the Partners organization in 1998 as its first chairman of Partners Psychiatry and Mental Health and professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He has been president of Brigham and Women’s Hospital since 2002. Prior to that, he served as president of North Shore Medical Center from 2000-2002.
“At Brigham and Women’s, Dr. Gottlieb has been a strong advocate for advancing patient care and safety initiatives, supporting the hospital’s research community ... and guiding an exceptional educational program that will lead the next generation of healthcare providers,” said Connors.
Connors said the announcement marks the end of a 12-month search by the Partners board of directors, which selected Gottlieb unanimously.
