ChartOne spins off eWebHealth unit, creating new company

By Healthcare Finance Staff

Tuesday's announced merger of two competing electronic medical record vendors, ChartOne and HealthPort, has also produced a new company.

ChartOne officials announced on Tuesday that eWebHealth, a provider of electronic workflow solutions for medical records, has been spun off and incorporated as an independent organization. In addition, the company will soon be deploying the next release of its product suite based on Microsoft's .NET platform.

The announcement was scheduled to coincide with Tuesday's acquisition of ChartOne by HealthPort, an Alpharetta, Ga.-based developer of revenue cycle management, EMR, document management, practice management, onsite conversion, release-of-information and healthcare consulting services. ChartOne's expertise lies in release-of-information technology and services.

"As an independent company, we will continue our focus on our customers and on taking our product platform to the next level of capability to provide even greater benefits to hospitals and their (health information management) organizations," said George Abatjoglou, the executive vice president of product operations for eWebHealth who will now become the new company's president. "Our software-as-a-service model already sets the standard for efficiency, low overhead costs and continuous improvement, and the capabilities of our new .NET platform will further establish eWebHealth as an enterprise-wide solution.

ChartOne, originally based in San Jose, Calif., had acquired eWebHealth - then based in Alpharetta - in July of 2004, when it was named InterTech Information Management, Inc.  Originally called eWebCoding, the company focused on providing applications for medical record access using the application service provider (ASP) model, before expanding to include revenue cycle management, record access and other document management services.

"As ChartOne's technology division, we learned a great deal about helping leading healthcare organizations achieve e-HIM excellence," said Brian Cahill, eWebHealth's CEO. "We have incorporated that experience as well as significant technology enhancements into the new platform."
