The MetroHealth System, one of the largest healthcare systems in Ohio, plans to cut 112 jobs in order to break even financially in 2009.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, layoffs and job eliminations are expected to save the hospital about $6 million in 2009.
The job eliminations are primarily in unfilled positions, although approximately 25 employees will be laid off effective the first of December.
MetroHealth's interim president, Mark Moran, has been holding meetings with employees in recent weeks outlining the need for more cuts.
Affiliated with the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, MetroHealth had a poor first quarter in 2008, losing about $8 million, although the health system showed financial improvement the following two quarters.
MetroHealth laid off 73 employees in May, and the jobs were left unfilled because of the deficit. The layoffs and other moves were expected to save the hospital about $13 million.
The MetroHealth System is comprised of a major medical center, a rehabilitation hospital, two long-term care/skilled nursing centers, an outpatient surgery center and a network of community-based healthcare centers.
