With the final January 31 deadline for open enrollment looming, close to 9 million consumers have signed up for healthcare coverage through the marketplace, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
During week 12 from January 17-23, about 8.9 million consumers signed-up, according to CMS.
Net plan selections for week 12 totaled 103,172, CMS said. This includes net new plan selections of 144,971 minus any consumer or insurer-initiated cancellations for new plan selections.
This compares to Week 11, when total pan selections totalled 399,885, but with cancellations, the net total was 153,631, for a cumulative total of 8.8 million enrolled, according to CMS.
This year as opposed to last, the number of net plan selections accounts for both insurer and consumer-initiated cancellations that occur before the end of open enrollment.
Open enrollment through Healthcare.gov began November 1 and ends on Sunday, Jan. 31.
"The clock is ticking with just four days left before January 31, the final enrollment deadline for 2016 health coverage," said Secretary for Health and Human Services, Sylvia Burwell. "We are focused on making sure people know that financial help is available, the deadline is fast approaching and that we're here to help them enroll – so that they don't risk having to pay a penalty of $695 or more for not having health insurance."
