Community Health Systems to acquire Scranton-area health system

Community Health Systems, a publicly-traded 133-hospital management company in Franklin, Tenn., has executed a definitive agreement to acquire the assets of Moses Taylor Health Care System, in Scranton, Pa.

The Moses Taylor system includes 217-bed Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton and 25-bed Mid-Valley Hospital in Peckville, Pa. The transaction is subject to federal and state regulatory approvals, including review and approval by the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Currently, Community Health Systems operates 13 hospitals in Pennsylvania, including recently acquired facilities in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and other surrounding cities.

"The acquisition of Moses Taylor Health Care System will provide a compelling opportunity to expand our operations in northeast Pennsylvania," said Wayne T. Smith, CEO of CHS, in a statement. "We look forward to new opportunities for collaboration, sharing of best practices, resources and expertise as we continue to expand and enhance the health services available in this region."

The 133 hospitals owned by CHS are located in 29 states with an aggregate of approximately 19,500 licensed beds.
