Community Health Systems, Inc., the largest publicly traded hospital company in the United States, has acquired the Marion Regional Healthcare System in Marion, S.C., including 124-bed Marion Regional Hospital.

Marion Regional becomes the sixth Community Health Systems-affiliated acute care hospital in South Carolina. It is located approximately 20 miles east of the Carolinas Health System, an affiliated 420-bed tertiary hospital in Florence, S.C.

The Franklin, Tenn.-based hospital company also acquired Mullins Nursing Center, a 92-bed skilled nursing facility, as well as other ancillary services, in the deal.

"We are pleased to expand our presence in South Carolina and look forward to opportunities for Marion Regional Hospital and our other affiliated hospitals in South Carolina to work collaboratively as they advance healthcare for their respective communities," said Wayne T. Smith, president and CEO of Community Health Systems, Inc.

Through its subsidiaries, Community Health Systems owns, leases or operates 123 hospitals in 29 states with an aggregate of approximately 18,000 licensed beds. Its hospitals offer a broad range of inpatient and surgical services, outpatient treatment and skilled nursing care.

In addition, through its QHR subsidiary, the company provides management and consulting services to approximately 150 independent non-affiliated general acute care hospitals.
