The Mercy Primary Care Center has received $300,000 to expand access to healthcare for the uninsured in Detroit.
The grant, from the Troy, Mich.-based Kresge Foundation’s Health Clinic Opportunity Fund, will be disbursed over two years.
The money will fund ancillary care services such as medical eye exams for diabetic patients, imaging, lab work, transportation and pharmaceuticals. MPCC can expect to increase the amount of uninsured patients treated at the clinic by approximately 120 per year for those two years. Currently, MPCC limits open enrollment for new patients to four times per year.
With the grant, the clinic will be able to take an additional 10 patients per month on a first come, first served, call-in basis. MPCC’s next enrollment period begins on January 12.
MPCC, a continuing ministry of Novi, Mich.-based Trinity Health, serves Detroit’s uninsured. The center’s mission is to provide a medical safety net for uninsured adults who require healthcare services to improve their quality of life. In 2009, The facility served 1,000 patients, providing nearly 5,000 patient visits.
The Kresge Foundation is a $2.8 billion private, national foundation that seeks to influence the quality of life for future generations through its support of nonprofit organizations.
