Financial leadership on the agenda

HFMA ANI 2014 sessions offer career advice
By Richard Pizzi

Strong executive leadership is indispensible to the effective, and efficient, functioning of a hospital business office. To that end, CFOs and other finance executives might consider the preconference career sessions available this Sunday at HFMA’s 2014 National Institute.

During one panel discussion, executives at Indianapolis-based St. Vincent’s Health System will assess the shifting requirements of today’s CFO and provide advice for those moving into or recruiting for top finance roles. Ian Worden, St. Vincent’s System Vice President and COO, and Kimberly Hodgkinson, the health system’s CFO, are the featured speakers.

Also on Sunday, a panel of CFOs will discuss balancing competing priorities, always a challenge, inside and outside the office. Featured speakers are Carol Friesen, VP of Health System Services at Bryan Health; Kari Cornicelli, VP & CFO at Sharp Grossmont Hospital; Mary Mirabelli, CFO & VP of implementations, CSG Group at HCA; and Rebecca L. Speight, CFO of Lake Pointe Health Network.

Another preconference career session will focus on the future role of the CFO, the new executive leadership skills required in the rapidly changing healthcare environment and innovative career strategies for finance leaders. Featured speakers include James Schuessler, the former interim CEO of Seton Medical Center and Seton Coastside, and Tim Morgan, CEO of B.E. Smith.
