Medi-CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, a not-for-profit healthcare insurer, has signed a three-year, multi-million dollar contract with Andover, Mass.-based technology company CGI Group for business process services. The contract renews an existing agreement.

An independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, Medi-CareFirst offers health insurance products and administrative services to more than 3.2 million individuals and groups in the District of Columbia, Maryland and northern Virginia.

Medi-CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield is the business name of Group Hospitalization and Medical Services, Inc. and First Care, Inc., which are affiliates of CareFirst.

"We look forward to continuing our work with CGI over the next three years to help us address business challenges," said Dennis Cupido, vice president of operations for Medi-CareFirst. He said CGI would help Medi-CareFirst support the insurer's growth while maintaining lower expenses over time.

Over the last three years, CGI and Medi-CareFirst have developed and implemented a number of initiatives designed to improve member satisfaction, which resulted in a reduction in the number of prescriptions drug errors and a transition to a per-member, per-month pricing model aimed at helping Medi-CareFirst better predict costs, Cupido said.

"CGI is committed to creating innovative and flexible partnerships designed to improve the customer experience and reduce their Medicare Part D expenses," said Paul Raymond, senior vice president of CGI's Northeast and commercial BPO business unit.
