SUNNYVALE, CA - IMPAC Medical Systems Inc., a subsidiary of the Stockholm, Sweden-based Elekta Group, has announced that it will make a $1.6 million investment in The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences of Toronto.

The investment, company officials say, will help introduce an integrated e-Health record system into the classrooms and laboratories of one of Canada's top educational institutes for that country's healthcare technology experts and therapists. The 49-year-old institute is Canada's only post-secondary institution devoted exclusively to applied health science education.

"This significant investment represents a major contribution in support of Michener's interprofessional curriculum and simulated clinical workflow," said Dr. Paul Gamble, president and CEO of the Michener Institute. "It's an ideal public-private partnership where both institutions have the opportunity to learn, and together, create innovative solutions for the applied health science community."

Brad Niblett, Michener's director of information management, said the EHR will provide students with a simulated clinical workflow, allowing them to build case studies and records and collaborate with other healthcare providers.

The investment will allow the Michener Institute to install equipment and software and pay for professional services, as well as training staff and faculty to implement and operate the e-Health record system. Simulated workflows are expected to be in place for the May 2008 semester.

"We are very pleased to establish a strategic alliance with The Michener Institute and contribute to the education of Ontario's most sought-after medical technologists," said Jay Hoey, president and CEO of IMPAC Medical Systems. "Michener graduates are providing a direct contribution to patient care and medical treatment outcomes."

IMPAC Medical Systems provides healthcare IT solutions that streamline clinical and business operations for cancer care. It was founded in 1990 and acquired by the Elekta Group in 2005.

The Elekta Group's clinical and information management solutions include the Leksell Gamma Knife for non-invasive treatment of brain disorders, Elekta Axesse and Elekta Synergy for stereotactic and image guided radiation therapy and radiosurgery, and the MOSAIQ suite of software for image-enabled EMR and management of clinical and patient data.
