Kaiser Permanente will enter the northern Nevada market in 2026 thanks to an agreement with Renown Health to jointly own a health plan and new outpatient care delivery system in the region.
The two nonprofits have said they want to improve access and expand affordable care options in northern Nevada.
“Our mission calls us to bring high-quality, affordable health care and coverage to as many people and communities as we can,” said Greg A. Adams, chair and CEO of Kaiser Permanente. “Our members, employers, physicians and community members have been asking us to provide our unique offering of value-based care in Nevada for some time.”
WHAT’S THE IMPACT
According to the announcement, Nevada’s economy is drawing in new businesses and residents, with Reno representing the second-largest metropolitan market in the state.
Under the new agreement, pending regulatory approval, Kaiser Permanente Nevada will offer health plan coverage to employers and the people of northern Nevada starting with open enrollment in 2026.
Kaiser Permanente Nevada will pair Hometown Health, the insurance arm of Renown Health, with its value-based care model.
It also plans to open a multispecialty ambulatory health system with convenient locations in central and northern Reno. Members and patients will access multispecialty care, diagnostic, pharmacy and ancillary services at these locations and at the existing Del Monte Senior Care Plus Clinic in Reno.
Renown Health has owned and operated Hometown Health since 1988. Renown is the region’s largest, locally governed, not-for-profit academic healthcare network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California.
It will continue to operate as an independent nonprofit organization and health system and will continue to accept all current health insurance plans for patient care.
The two organizations are entering into a joint venture, with Kaiser Permanente acquiring a majority interest in Hometown Health. There are no immediate changes to Hometown Health/Senior Care Plus plans, networks or points of contact, the companies said.
THE LARGER TREND
In August, Kaiser Permanente reported second-quarter net income of $3.2 billion, a 55% increase over last year’s Q2 net income of $2 billion.
Membership across Kaiser Permanente and Risant Health affiliates was more than 13.1 million as of June 30.
