Largest hospital in New Jersey redesigns emergency department

By Richard Pizzi

Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus, N.J. has completed the redesign and renovation of its 8,000-square-foot emergency department.

Poskanzer Skott Architects of Ridgewood, N.J., provided space planning and construction administration services for the project.

"This renovation was a complex and elaborate project requiring that the work be completed during business hours without disruptions to Bergen Regional's very busy emergency department," said Larry Skott, principal and partner at Poskanzer Skott. "It will be a challenge to keep the emergency department fully operational during the four phases."

For the completed, first phase of the project, Poskanzer Skott Architects redesigned a new entranceway, waiting room, triage section, and administrative space.

The second phase was designed to specialize in behavioral patients and critical needs. This section includes eight behavioral care rooms, which can also be used for isolation purposes in major emergencies.

The final two phases will be completed in early 2009.

Bergen Regional Medical Center is the largest hospital in the state with more than 1,000 beds. The renovations to the emergency department will allow for 12 emergency bays for medical care and 8 bays for behavioral healthcare.
