
Despite more than 20 originally signing up, the are now only 18 accountable care organizations in the Next Generation ACO model. The newest ACO program by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services offers higher opportunities for incentive payments if participating providers agree to take on more risk.
In order to get rewards, CMS has set some hefty financial targets. That's why Pennsylvania-based RiverHealth decided to exit the program. Heritage California and WakeMed Key Community Care in North Carolina also left.
