Medical Banking Project, industry group planning projects

By Fred Bazzoli

The Medical Banking Project and the Automotive Industry Action Group are renewing commitments to work together on a variety of projects intended to involve banks in the healthcare industry.

The two groups are reaffirming their relationship to The Joint Taskgroup for Value in Health, a collaborative project of the two organizations.

Executives from the financial services, healthcare and automotive industries and state governments are meeting with the task group this week, with the aim of developing a "medical banking toolkit." The toolkit is intended for use by banks to help them team with employers to improve diverse activities such as employee wellness and healthcare, said John Casillas, president of the Medical Banking Project.

The meeting this week includes representatives from Chrysler, Arvin Meritor, BNY Mellon, Wachovia, OptumHealthBank, DestinationRx, USHealthrecords, TriHealix, E-Duction, Seriosity and the Michigan Department of Public Health, among others, Casillas said.

Discussion topics will include administrative efficiencies, health IT tools, the medical home and models to coordinate information about the use of community healthcare resources.

One possible long-term result of the cooperative effort could be speeding up the adoption of personal "health-wealth portals," which could give employees a way to access financial and health information through the use of bank networks. That is only in a discussion phase at this point, Casillas said.

The Automotive Industry Action Group is a 1,500-member industry action group that aims to improve members' profitability by enhancing business processes, improving the supply chain or reducing costs. The AIAG has worked with the Franklin, Tenn.-based Medical Banking Project for several years.

The Medical Banking Project is a policy research and strategic advisory firm that's seeking to optimize banking resources for use within healthcare.
