In an effort to reduce the spread of HIV, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) will award 16 agencies about $6.2 million in state and federal money starting in January 2009.
The HIV prevention grants will mark a new, four-year funding cycle. Money will be awarded to 22 programs targeted at preventing the spread of HIV in adults and young people.
"The grants represent our continued commitment to prevent as many new HIV infections as possible within the communities hardest hit by this epidemic," said Peter Carr, director of the STD and HIV Section at MDH. "We selected programs that will have the greatest chance of successfully reaching and impacting those at high risk of infection. We also made an effort to provide a good geographic balance of prevention programs, delivered through a diverse group of agencies."
A total of 57 proposals were received from 38 different agencies. Decisions were based on populations identified within statewide HIV prevention plans, and recommendations submitted by a 47-member community proposal review committee.
Many programs are in the Twin Cities metropolitan area where the epidemic is greatest. To follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) recommendation for more universal testing, some programs will offer HIV testing and counseling services.
