New children's hospital under construction in Chicago

By Richard Pizzi

A new children's hospital under construction in Chicago is more than 50 percent complete and slated to open in 2012.

The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago is being built on the campus of its academic partner, Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.

Chicago philanthropist Ann Lurie has pledged $100 million to help create the new hospital.

The facility will have 288 private licensed beds, with the capacity to grow to 313 beds. The hospital's emergency department will have 45 beds and include three trauma/procedure rooms, four nurse triage rooms, two diagnostic radiology rooms and one dedicated CT scanner.

The construction of Lurie Children's is being managed by a joint venture between Mortenson Construction and Power Construction, two leading healthcare construction firms.

According to Robert Gallo, senior vice president at Power Construction, 75 percent of the hospital's construction contracts and subcontracts totaling $373 million have been awarded to 40 Illinois companies.
