By Richard Pizzi

Margaret Hamburg, MD, a former New York City health commissioner, is President Barack Obama's nominee for Food and Drug Administration commissioner.

Hamburg is currently a senior scientist at the nonprofit Nuclear Threat Initiative in Washington, D.C., which works to reduce the global threats from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.

She has also worked as an assistant director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and as a Health and Human Services department advisor on policy and regulations.

While serving as New York health commissioner, Hamburg focused on bioterrorism, tuberculosis control, childhood immunization and needle-exchange initiatives.

Obama also named Baltimore Health Commissioner Joshua Sharfstein to serve as Hamburg's deputy.
