Our mission - to give providers the news they need to know

By Neil Rouda

Just a year ago we published our first issue of Healthcare Finance News, distributing the premiere edition at the HFMA’s Annual National Institute in Orlando. Today, this newspaper – which will also be available at this year’s ANI in San Diego – enjoys wide readership and reaches more healthcare financial managers than any other periodical published, period.

Last month, we received word that Healthcare Finance News was given the silver award for “best new publication” by the American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors, a large organization representing publishers of myriad medical journals as well as healthcare management publications like this one.

The critical need to exchange information – and the sheer abundance of it – provides our raison d’etre. Our team of newspaper-honed journalists report and organize news that matters to you for the online daily news service at www.healthcarefinancenews.com, the weekly Healthcare Finance NewsWeek e-newsletter, and the monthly print edition.

This month, you’ll find several stories about real-world P4P initiatives, including a survey showing inconsistent incentives from health plans for adoption of critical IT underpinnings (p. 1), a study from Massachusetts showing that financial incentives are, alone, not enough (p. 15), and a report from Silicon Valley about a P4P program with big sponsors and some pretty good first-year results (p. 22).

You’ll also find considerable coverage of the nursing shortage, which has reached critical condition in many areas. Interestingly, the lack of RNs and LPNs is in large part caused by a lack of nurses with advanced degrees, including PhDs. Coverage begins on page 3.

In short, concise stories, you’ll find lots of information in these pages to help you find new ways to save money and better manage the limited resources, which are a fact of life for healthcare organizations.

And that serves our mission – and yours – very well.
