Payers hesitant to adopt bundled payments without positive provider feedback

By Rene Letourneau

Fifty-seven percent of private health plan payers are hesitant to accelerate the adoption of bundled payments as a new reimbursement model and would be more likely to do so upon receiving an indication of positive feedback from physicians and hospitals, according to a recent poll from healthcare IT and research firm Gantry Group, LLC.

Gantry Group recently polled executives from private health plans to assess the healthcare industry drivers that would accelerate the adoption of bundled payments.

Health plans are most concerned about their provider networks' willingness to accept and adopt payment bundling as a new reimbursement method.

"Payers would accelerate bundled payment initiatives with the indication of positive feedback and proactive participation in the payment bundle designs from physicians and hospitals," Gantry Group said in a press release. "Related to this issue, payers believe that the availability of pre-built, standardized payment bundles from a credible source that is trusted by physicians would improve providers' receptivity to bundled payments."
