Pennsylvania hospital signs billing management deal

By Richard Pizzi

St. Joseph Medical Center in Reading, Pa., has selected a vendor to manage the medical billing processes for its physician network.

The non-profit hospital will deploy software from Atlanta-based McKesson's Revenue Management Solutions group which includes patient billing, accounts receivable management and reporting capabilities, along with practice management software and payer connectivity services.

St. Joseph is affiliated with Catholic Health Initiatives, a non-profit corporation based in Denver that includes 68 hospitals and 44 long-term care, assisted and independent living and residential facilities.

St. Joseph joins eight CHI practices, representing more than 250 physicians, currently relying on McKesson RMS to manage revenue management services. The hospital will be able to share a common platform for collecting and interpreting financial data with other CHI organizations.

"We needed a partner who could provide a high level of customer service by treating our patients with courtesy and compassion while simultaneously optimizing our revenue and delivering the reporting we needed to make strategic business decisions," said David Lim, chief financial officer at St. Joseph.

St. Joseph also plans to use the new software's reporting capabilities to enable managers at both the local and corporate level to use data obtained from patient encounters to develop benchmarks for practice performance.

"In today's challenging healthcare environment, physicians need efficient solutions to streamline operations and ensure they have the time and resources to provide the best patient care possible," said Pat Leonard, senior vice president and general manager for McKesson's RMS group.
