Philadelphia health system signs supply chain management deal

By Richard Pizzi

Temple University Health System in Philadelphia has selected a new provider of supply chain management and procurement services to help manage approximately $150 million in annual spending.

"We were seeking ways to deliver safe, quality care to our patients while reducing operating costs (and) we were seeking a customized solution to improve supply chain processes for our health system," said Sandy Gomberg, interim CEO of Temple University Hospital, the health system's flagship hospital.

Temple signed a three-year deal with Dallas-based Broadlane to use the company's national GPO portfolio of consumable supplies, equipment, pharmaceuticals and purchased services. Additionally, the health system will use Broadlane's client portal to access contract and vendor information, run reports and download training and continuing education.

The cost-management services Temple will get from the agreement with Broadlane include transaction management services, informatics, and capital equipment and pharmacy services.

"Many healthcare providers are searching for ways to reduce operating costs in today's economic environment (and) Temple had very specific needs," said David Ricker, Broadlane's president and CEO. "We are pleased that the custom supply chain solution we developed in conjunction with Temple will effectively meet their needs."
