Picis unveils coding tool for hospital-owned outpatient cancer centers

By Eric Wicklund

Picis has launched a new revenue cycle management tool designed to help hospitals deal with two areas of growth: Cancer care and outpatient treatment.

The Wakefield, Mass.-based developer of acute-care solutions has unveiled LYNX I/Point, a charge capture solution designed specifically for hospital-owned infusion and oncology treatment centers. The tool is designed to work alongside LYNX E/Point (emergency departments) and C/Point (hospital-owned clinics) to improve coding and revenue management throughout the hospital system.

“Hospital-owned infusion and oncology treatment centers have a significant impact on an organization’s operations and represent a growing portion of their healthcare revenue – roughly 150 infusions are delivered each day in some of the larger infusion and oncology treatment centers. As a result, compliance, accuracy and charge capture in these departments are becoming increasingly challenging,” said Mike DeTolla, senior vice president of revenue management solutions for Picis LYNX Medical Systems. “Along with E/Point in the emergency department and C/Point for outpatient clinics, I/Point is an integral piece of our revenue/charge capture suite that hospitals and health systems rely on to consistently manage and improve performance of their outpatient care operations.”

Company officials cite a recent survey by the Healthcare Management Academy that indicates one in five cancer patients are seeking treatment at hospital-owned infusion or cancer treatment centers, and three-quarters of those organizations are projects growth in both facilities and treatment therapies over the next several years. Added to those statistics is a recent survey that indicates 80 percent to 90 percent of all cancer care in the country is handled through outpatient facilities, which are less expensive than acute inpatient care.

“Consistent charge capture for infusions and injections is one of the biggest challenges hospitals face, and it represents a significant portion of outpatient revenue,” said Reggie Allen, MBA, RN, system director for quality and clinical operations at CHRISTUS Health in Houston. “Picis LYNX solutions simplify this process for clinicians, enabling them to reduce documentation errors and ensure compliance while they focus on patient care.”

Picis, a division of Eden Prairie, Minn.-based Ingenix, has scheduled two webinars to explain how LYNX I/Point helps hospitals meet infusion/oncology services charging compliance. The sessions are scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon ET on Tuesday, Nov. 9, and 2-3 p.m. ET on Thursday, Nov. 18.
