SCA and Hawaii Pacific Health to operate Honolulu surgery center

By Chelsey Ledue

Surgical Care Affiliates, one of the country's largest providers of specialty surgical services, is teaming with Hawaii Pacific Health to build and operate a new outpatient surgery center in Honolulu.

SCA and Hawaii Pacific Health are seeking a downtown site for the new facility. SCA will continue to run its existing Surgicare of Hawaii outpatient surgery center on South Beretania Street until the new center is open,  some time in 2010.

"This partnership allows us to meet the increasing community demand for ambulatory surgical capacity in a patient-friendly environment," said Chuck Sted, chief executive officer of Hawaii Pacific Health, the state's largest healthcare provider and a non-profit network.

Under SCA's day-to-day-management, Surgicare of Hawaii will operate as a multi-specialty center offering an array of medical services, including orthopedics, pain management, ophthalmology, general surgery, otolaryngology, urology, obstetrics/gynecology, plastics and podiatry.

"The new, expanded facility will not only enhance our ability to offer patients leading-edge outpatient services in a convenient location, but it also will free up inpatient capacity in our other facilities to deliver more complex procedures and care," said Sted.

"(Hawaii Pacific Health) recognizes the need for a high quality, cost effective, outpatient surgical facility, and we will be able to jointly meet that need," said Andrew Hayek, Chief Executive Officer of SCA.
