PSS world medical sells shares of Athenahealth
PSS World Medical has sold a portion of its shares of athenahealth, Inc., a Watertown, Mass.-based provider of Internet-based IT and business management services to physician practices. The Jacksonville, Fla.-based distributor of medical products and inventory management systems to physicians and elder care providers had made a $22.5 million equity investment in athenahealth last July, capturing about 1.5 million, or 5 percent, of the company’s outstanding shares. “The athenahealth product is a great fit for our customers, especially in this era of declining physician incomes,” PSS Chairman and CEO David A. Smith said. “We invested several million dollars in training, education and roll-out for this long-term relationship that is now offset by the partial monetization of our stock holdings.”
RF technologies to help with new medicare rules
RF Technologies of Brookfield, Wis. is seeking partnerships with healthcare providers to help them in complying with new Medicare regulations set to go into effect on Oct. 1. The regulations, mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), indicate healthcare providers will not be eligible for reimbursement of expenses related to preventable hospital injuries.
MPV signs contracts with three physician groups
Medical Present Value, Inc., an Austin, Texas-based provider of financial tools and services to manage payer contracts and audit reimbursement, recently signed contracts with three physician groups to implement the company’s Phynance solution. Those signing deals with MPV were Pentucket Medical Associates, Inc., a 54-provider multi-specialty group based in Haverhill, Mass.; The Indiana Hand Center, a 16-physician specialty group based in Indianapolis; and OrthoMaryland, a Baltimore-based, 17-physician orthopaedic practice.
Wolters Kluwer Health to use PHS’ Medi-Span line
Wolters Kluwer Health of Conshohocken, Pa. has entered into an exclusive co-marketing relationship with Pharmacy Healthcare Solutions, Inc., focusing on its Medi-Span product line. The Medi-Span line is composed of drug and clinical information databases that are embedded in a wide range of healthcare applications, including retail pharmacy, pharmacy benefit management, claims processing and electronic medical records. PHSI will work with Wolters Kluwer Health customers to convert from their previous information databases to Medi-Span.
