The healthcare provider community must make changes to the delivery of care in order to meet the challenges currently facing the industry and the nation. That will be the central message Brent James, MD, chief quality officer and executive director of the Institute for Health Care Delivery Research at Intermountain Healthcare delivers during his speech “Clinical Transformation and Increasing Value,” at the Healthcare Financial Management Association’s ANI conference in Las Vegas at 2:45 p.m. on Monday, June 25.
“We’re heading into very different financial times in healthcare,” said James. “The federal government is running out of money and two-thirds of the problem is healthcare. Healthcare is the best the world has ever seen, but it falls short of its potential. There are real opportunities to be better.”
James said his presentation will hit on five key points:
1. geographic variations in care;
2. the need for more review of inappropriate care;
3. concerns around patient safety;
4. failure of execution; and
5. waste in the system.
“The estimate is that about 50 percent of healthcare spending is not adding value from the patient perspective,” said James. “That’s 50 percent of $3 trillion.”
“Healthcare is the key to saving the U.S. economy, and some people are figuring this out,” he added. “And as they are, they are creating a new world.”
In his speech, James will encourage his audience to ask themselves what that new world will look like and how they can best achieve it.
James plans to end his session with a question-and-answer segment designed to create an open discussion.
The number of questions that his presentation spawns never fail to generate an energized and dynamic conversation, said James.
“It always starts out kind of depressing, but finishes up with people thinking ‘Wow, what an interesting time to be in healthcare,’” he said.
“Our opportunities to create and build are unparalleled,” said James. “If you are ready for change, that is. It’s all about change.”
