Truven Health Analytics on Friday announced its top U.S. hospitals for cardiovascular services, based on the clinical quality of the care they give to patients and the cost savings they are realizing.
The firm analyzes performance metrics and adjusts them for risk based on a host of measures, including the cost of the care. For example, Truven said the winning hospitals spent $6,100 less on average per bypass surgery than hospitals that did not win recognition. The winning hospitals also spent an average of $1,200 less per patient admitted with heart failure.

"The nation's most successful hospitals know that strategic alignment of quality, costs, and the patient experience is critical to delivering top-quality care," Jean Chenoweth, Truven's senior vice president for performance improvement and the 100 Top Hospitals program, said in the announcement. "We're proud to recognize their diligent efforts."
Truven said the winning hospitals also had readmission rates more than 1 percent lower than other hospitals and inpatient survival rates as high as 33 percent better than non-winning facilities. They also saw 11 percent fewer complications and shorter lengths of stay.
If all U.S. hospitals had the same results as the winning group, Truven said, the industry could save $1.3 billion on Medicare patients alone.
