Univ. of Michigan health system sheds 80 jobs

By Richard Pizzi

The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers is cutting 80 jobs in an ongoing attempt to improve its financial situation.

Doug Strong, chief executive officer of UMHHC, said the employees to be let go represent about one half of 1 percent of the total workforce. He said notifications would come in the second week of December.

UMHHC had released a financial improvement plan in late October, in which it asked certain non-patient care departments to identify ways to reduce expenses, redesign administrative and clinical care functions for better efficiency and implement a hiring freeze for non-patient caregiver positions.

Strong said these efforts to meet budget goals were not successful, and reductions force in a few departments would be necessary.

The initial goal of the cost-saving efforts at the U-M Health System was to protect patient-care services while maintaining a positive operating margin. Strong said the health system would continue to look for ways to increase levels of patient care activity and identify effective cost-management strategies.
