Vendor Notebook: CarePayment Technologies acquires Vitality Financial

CarePayment Technologies, Inc., a Portland, Ore.-based provider of financial and patient advocacy services for healthcare providers, has acquired San Francisco-based Vitality Financial, which provides hospital payment solutions to medical providers and patients.

Thomson Reuters, based in New York, has acquired Healthcare Data Management, Inc., a provider of health benefits auditing and expense management reporting solutions. The company also announced that Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C., has gone live with the company’s Clinical Xpert mobile data system, enabling healthcare providers to access patient data via a Web portal or mobile device.

A.D.A.M., Inc., an Atlanta-based provider of consumer education and online tools for healthcare providers and payers, has been purchased by Ebix, an Atlanta-based provider of e-commerce services to the insurance industry, for roughly $66 million in stock.

Portico Systems of Blue Bell, Pa., has announced that Healthfirst, a New York-based health plan with more than 550,000 members and a network of more than 20,000 providers, will implement the company’s Contract manager, Courier and Negotiator solutions to improve its contracting processes.

McKesson, headquartered in Atlanta, is joining forces with the Healthcare Financial Management Association to co-host an educational webinar series titled “Health Reform and Your Revenue Cycle.” The series starts Sept. 16 and will feature eight sessions. In addition, the company has announced that the Association of Alexandria Radiologists, an independent radiology practice with outpatient imaging centers and affiliations with four hospitals in northern Virginia, has chosen McKesson’s Revenue Management Solutions (RMS) for radiology billing and practice management.

MedAssets, Inc., based in Nashville, has announced that the Connecticut-based Stamford Health System will use the company’s spend management services and solutions.

Standard Register, a Dayton, Ohio-based provider of document and information management solutions for healthcare, has signed a three-year agreement with Premier Purchasing Partners, L.P., the group purchasing unit 0f Premier, to provide print shop management services, electronic forms, electronic content management solutions and document imaging services.

MediClick, a Raleigh, N.C.-based developer of supply chain management solutions, has added a Fees Workbench feature to its MediClick for Contracts Analysis solution, part of the Sprint 023 product enhancement.

CSI Financial Services of San Diego has announced that it will partner with Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa, to offer a patient-friendly loan program to the hospital’s patients.

Emdeon, Inc., a Nashville-based provider of healthcare revenue and payment cycle solutions, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Chamberlin Edmonds & Associates, Inc., an Atlanta-based provider of government program eligibility and enrollment services.

Asteres, Inc., a San Diego-based developer of automated prescription-pickup kiosks for retail, hospital and military pharmacies, has received three additional patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Alere Health, the health management services business of Atlanta-based Alere, Inc., has achieved full accreditation for its disease management program from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

Ramsell Public Health Rx, an Oakland, Calif.-based pharmacy benefit and information management company, has announced a partnership with the state of Delaware to administer its AIDS Drug Assistance Program.

Berkheimer Outsourcing, Inc., the Healthcare Management Group and New Century Healthcare Solutions, LLC, all based in Canada, have joined forces to launch ONE Source Healthcare Solutions, LLC, which will offer physicians, hospitals and community clinics IT system and practice management solutions.

Veritec, Inc., a Golden Valley, Minn.-based developer of mobile banking debit card solutions, has signed an agreement with Veterans Healthcare USA of Reno, Nev., to begin marketing a co-branded VHC/blinx On-Off debit card for veterans, their families and 3.9 million veteran-owned businesses.

Brookdale Senior Living, Inc., which owns and operates senior living communities in 35 states, has completed two mortgage debt refinancing transactions in the aggregate principal amount of $219 million. The refinancing addresses all of the company’s 2011 debt maturities and a significant portion of its 2012 maturities, according to company officials.

Premier Purchasing Partners, the group purchasing unit of Raleigh, N.C.-based Premier, has awarded a contract to MEDmarketplace.com to sell surplus hospital equipment and supplies for Premier members.

VMware, Inc., a Palo Alto, Calif.-based developer of virtualization software, has announced plans to acquire both the Integrien Corp., an Irvine, Calif.-based maker of software for online transactions, and TriCipher, Inc., a Los Gatos, Calif.-based maker of identity and access management software.

SeniorBridge, a New York-based national health management company, has announced a partnership with Metropolitan Health Networks, Inc., a West Palm Beach, Fla.-based provider of healthcare services, to launch a year-long care management pilot program involving Medicare beneficiaries. The program, SeniorBridge Care management for Metcare, will focus on assisting those with multiple chronic conditions who are frequently hospitalized.

Care Investment Trust, Inc., a New York-based real estate investment and finance company that invests in healthcare-related real estate and commercial mortgage debt, has announced that the New York Stock Exchange suspended trading of the company’s common stock as of Aug. 26. NYSE officials say the action was taken because fewer than 600,000 shares of the company’s stock are publicly held. The company plans to appeal the decision.

The Nightingale Informatix Corporation, a Markham, Ontario, Canada-based provider of electronic medical record and practice management solutions, has achieved certification as an approved vendor for the EMR program in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.

DocuLynx, Inc., an Omaha, Neb.-based provider of document archive and retrieval, electronic distribution and Web presentation solutions, has acquired the docHarbor online and document management divisions of Anacomp for $27.5 million.

The American Physicians Insurance Group, an Austin, Texas-based provider of medical professional liability insurance services for physicians, dentists and other healthcare professionals in Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, has agreed to be acquired by the ProAssurance Corporation, a Birmingham, Ala.-based provider of professional liability insurance products.

The Walgreen Company, based in Deerfield, Ill., and Omnicare, Inc., based in Covington, Ky., have reached an agreement whereby Omnicare will acquired substantially all of the assets of Walgreen’s long-term care pharmacy business and Walgreen’s will acquire substantially all of the assets of Omnicare’s Home infusion business. In addition, Walgreen has reached an agreement with Graymark Healthcare, Inc., of Oklahoma City, Okla., to acquire ApothecaryRx, the company’s independent pharmacy division, consisting of 18 stores in five states.

Novus Health, a Toronto-based provider of online and telephone support solutions for healthcare providers, has announced a partnership with Canadian travel health concierge provider InRoomMD.

NextGen Healthcare Information Systems, based in Horsham, Pa., has announced that the Mount Kisko Medical group of New York will deploy the company’s Ambulatory Electronic Health Record, Practice Management and Patient Portal solutions.

The Banyan Corporation, a Boca Raton, Fla.-based holding company focused on investing in and building a network of operating subsidiaries, is partnering with Mark Eric Bailey, a provider of practice finance and advice at Capital4Healthcare, LLC, to develop America’s Dentist, a proposed company that would provide a vast array of services to dental practices nationwide, including marketing, real estate and leasing support, practice management and analysis, finance, branding, practice purchase and sale representation and practice transitions.

SUNRx, based in Bensalem, Pa., has announced that its automated discount drug solution is now available for Critical Access Hospitals looking to manage and implement 340B discount drug programs.

Total HealthCare Management, Inc., a Santa Ana, Calif.-based provider of managed care solutions, has changed its name to Paladin Managed Care Services.

Medrec, Inc., a San Antonio, Texas-based therapy staffing firm, has completed its acquisition of Denver-based Complete Medical Staffing and California Medical Staffing, collectively known as CMS.

The LifeSecure Insurance Company of Brighton, Mich., has unveiled Hospital recovery Insurance, a new offering in which covered individuals will receive a cash benefit payment based on the number of days they are hospitalized up to a pre-set limit.

Benefitfocus, based in Charleston, S.C., has announced that the UFCW & Employers Trust, LLC, has renewed its partnership with the company to automate the 2011 benefits enrollment process for its more than 68,000 members.

Intelimedix, a Lakeland, Fla.-based provider of predictive healthcare analytics and business intelligence solutions, has announced the launch of its Tru:Connect collaborative portal.

The HMS Holdings Corp., a New York-based provider of cost management services for government-sponsored health and human services programs, has acquired Chapman Kelly, Inc., a Jefferson, Ind.-based healthcare auditing company.

Independence Blue Cross, a Pennsylvania-based health insurer, has launched 25 new healthcare plans for small businesses. The plans, called Blue Solutions, take the form of HMO, PPO, Direct Point-of-Service and High-Deductible Plans and will be available to businesses of 50 employees or less on Oct. 1.

Highlander Partners, LP, a Dallas-based investment firm focused on private equity investments in middle-market companies in healthcare and other industries, and Flexpoint Ford, a private equity firm dedicated to the healthcare and financial services sectors, have completed the acquisition of Eagle Hospital Physicians, an Atlanta-based practice management firm providing hospitalist contract services, telemedicine and hospitalist temporary staffing to partners primarily in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Wolters Kluwer Health, based in Philadelphia, has announced that St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va., has selected ProVation Order Sets, powered by UpToDate Decision Support, as the organization’s electronic order set solution.

Novation, an Irving, Texas-based supply contracting company serving VHA, the University HealthSystem Consortium and ProVista, has awarded an agreement to CareFusion of San Diego for surgical wet/dry prep trays. Healthcare Data Services of Boston has announced that Caritas Christi Network Services, the physician network for six hospitals in the Massachusetts-based Caritas Christi Health System, will use HDS Analyst for data management, reporting and quality monitoring services.

Availity, LLC, a Jacksonville, Fla.-based developer of health information exchange solutions, has acquired RealMed, an Indianapolis-based provider of revenue cycle management services.
