Vendor Notebook: Kareo closes on $9.5M investment

Kareo, Inc., an Irvine, Calif.-based provider of Web-based medical billing software for physicians, has closed on an investment by Boston venture capital firm OpenView Venture Partners. Together with an earlier stock purchase from another investor, the company has $9.5 million in hand to expand its product suite, enhance customer service, build our sales and marketing initiatives and bolster its management team.

AMN Healthcare Services, Inc., a San Diego-based developer of healthcare staffing and workforce solutions, has signed a managed service provider (MSP) and recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) contract with Hendrick Medical Center, a 500-bed hospital in Abilene, Texas.

Gemino Healthcare Finance of Philadelphia has provided a $4 million revolving line of credit in support of a recapitalization of Navix Diagnostics, Inc., a provider of outsourced ultrasound services to hospitals and specialty physician practices in the Northeast.

NextGen Healthcare Information Systems, Inc., based in Horsham, Pa., has been named a preferred vendor of electronic health records by the Massachusetts e-Health Institute, the federally designated Regional Extension Center for Massachusetts.

Eagle Hospital Physicians, an Atlanta-based practice management company providing hospitalist contract services, telemedicine and hospitalist temporary staffing to partners primarily in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, has been acquired by Highlander Partners, a Dallas-based investment firm focused on private equity investments in middle-market companies in healthcare and other industries, and Flexpoint Ford, a private equity firm focused on the healthcare and financial services sectors. The two are joined in the acquisition by Health Enterprise Partners.

The PSC Info Group, a Valley Forge, Pa.-based provider of consumer payment solutions and revenue acceleration tools, has launched Patient Payment Estimator, an enhancement of the company’s PAYMENTExpress electronic bill presentment and payment solution, powered by InstaMed.

InstaMed, a Philadelphia-based healthcare payments network, has raised $6 million in growth capital in a round of funding that included both debt and equity capital. The company will use the proceeds to sustain investment in new business and enhance data center infrastructure and operations.

MariChris, LLC, based in St. Augustine, Fla., has launched UnivERS Eligibility Determination Solutions, which are designed to work with Medicaid Management Information Systems, act as a stand-alone component of a healthcare eligibility determination solution or become part of a replacement for the outdated FAMAS systems.

Zepherella, Inc., a Chapel Hill, N.C.-based developer of online payment collection services for healthcare providers, has announced a partnership with Forrest Direct Pay, an Apex, N.C.-based developer of direct payment services for medical practices.

Med-Vantage, Inc., a San Francisco-based healthcare IT company, has received Health Information Product (HIP) certification from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its HealthSmart Enhanced Provider Directory, a Web-based provider search designed to offer detailed information on quality and cost.

PatientPoint, an Orlando, Fla.-based provider of multi-channel, self-service applications for the healthcare industry, has announced that U.S. Oncology, which serves more than 1,300 physicians in 500 locations in 39 states, will use the company’s solutions.

Novation, an Irving, Texas-based supply contracting company serving members of VHA, Inc., Provista and the University HealthSystem Consortium, has awarded an agreement to Bio-Rad Laboratories of Benicia, Calif., and

Nova Biomedical of Waltham, Mass., for single-analyte point-of-care testing, a new category in Novation’s portfolio. The company has also awarded an agreement to Hercules and Hercules, Inc., for housekeeping distribution as part of its Supplier Diversity program.

VHA, Inc., an Irving, Texas-based network of not-for-profit healthcare providers, has announced that Longmont

United Hospital in Longmont, Colo., has selected the organization’s PriceLYNX price benchmarking service, designed to help the hospital reduce supply expenses. The organization has also announced that it will offer a new leadership award, the Sustainability Excellence Award, to honor not-for-profit member hospitals that are leading the way in developing and implementing outstanding sustainability programs. Finally, the organization has announced that Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has joined the VHA network.

Patient Care Technology Systems, based in Charlotte, N.C., has announced that St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Ill., has selected the company’s Amelior Tracker system to track medical equipment throughout the facility.

Skyscape, a Marlborough, Mass.-based developer of clinical decision support for mobile devices, has launched a scholarship program for nursing students to recognize their innovative use of mobile technology in the care of patients. The first program will award more than $30,000 in scholarships and prizes for more than 500 nursing students, ranging from a first-place $2,500 scholarship to 500 $50 gift certificates.

PracticeMax, a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based provider of revenue cycle management and software services, has acquired Medinomics, a Shreveport, La.-based provider of practice management and electronic health record solutions and billing services to physician practices and hospitals across the South.

Versus Technology, based in Traverse City, Mich., has announced that the Bethesda Hospitals’ Emergency Preparedness Partnership, comprised of Suburban Hospital, the National Naval Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center and the National Library of Medicine, will use the company’s Versus Advantages software to support its RFID/real-time location system initiative.

Wolters Kluwer Health, based in Philadelphia, has announced that Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Wash., will deploy the company’s Medi-Span solution, designed to provide clinicians with point-of-care access to comprehensive drug information and medication decision support via the facility’s electronic medical record system. In addition, the company has announced that the Goshen Health System in Goshen, Ind., will implement the company’s ProVation MD software for gastroenterology procedure documentation and coding at Goshen General Hospital.

Edifecs, Inc., a Bellevue, Wash.-based provider of healthcare software solutions specializing in healthcare channel modernization for HIPAA 5010 and ICD-10 conversions, has announced that HealthPlus of Michigan will deploy the company’s software, including SpecBuilder and XEngine.

Picis, Inc., based in Wakefield, Mass., has announced that 29 U.S. healthcare facilities have deployed the company’s LYNX revenue management solutions for the emergency department during the second quarter of 2010.

Merge Healthcare, based in Milwaukee, has released version 6.0 of its Financials revenue cycle management solution and added several new customers during the past quarter, bringing the total number of customers using the company’s RCM products to more than 350.

The NCO Group, Inc., a Horsham, Pa.-based provider of business process outsourcing solutions, has launched a new end-to-end healthcare revenue cycle management solution. The company has also announced the acquisition of Health BluePrints, Inc., a healthcare solutions provider specializing in hospital revenue cycle management solutions.

The Oxford Finance Corporation of Alexandria, Va., a subsidiary of the Sumitomo Corporation, has closed on a $19.8 million senior credit facility with LifeHOUSE Health Services, which acquires and manages senior assisted and independent living and skilled nursing communities. The facility includes an $8.5 million revolving line of credit, a $6.6 million real estate term loan and a $4.7 million senior secured household term loan.

RelayHealth, an Atlanta-based provider of healthcare connectivity services, has unveiled Connected Orders, a front-end workflow solution designed to connect ambulatory-care physicians with hospital and freestanding reference laboratories, imaging centers and patients to automate the test ordering process.

TeleHealth Services of Raleigh, N.C., has announced that The Reading Hospital and Medical Center in Reading, Pa., will deploy the company’s interactive patient education and entertainment solutions as an extension of its Surgical Care Improvement Project.

MedAssets, Inc., an Atlanta-based provider of supply chain management solutions, has announced the acquisition of The Broadlane Group, a Dallas-based developer of supply chain management, strategic sourcing of supplies and services, capital equipment lifecycle management, medical device or PPI cost management, centralized procurement, clinical and lean process consulting and clinical workforce optimization programs.

MEDHOST, an Addison, Texas-based provider of healthcare throughput and emergency department software, has completed certification with Surescripts for its prescription routing service.

The MRO Corp., a King of Prussia, Pa.-based provider of disclosure management applications and services for healthcare providers, has launched AOD Online, a centralized tracking and reporting system designed to allow healthcare organizations to manage and resolve PHI disclosure challenges through enterprise-wide software.

MediClick, a Raleigh, N.C.-based developer of supply chain management solutions, has updated its MediClick for the Supply Chain software tool so that users can approve different dollar amounts for different types of products.

eGistics, a Dallas-based provider of hosted document management solutions, has announced an alliance with Direct Insite, a global provider of financial supply chain automation solutions, to develop an end-to-end solution for healthcare payables.
