Children's Hospital of Philadelphia removes executive VP and general counsel

By Stephanie Bouchard

Roosevelt Hairston, Jr., the executive vice president and general counsel for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, has been fired, according to a statement made last week by hospital officials.

Hairston was fired following an internal investigation, which found evidence of what the hospital said were “financial irregularities” on Hairston’s part. The hospital’s announcement made clear that the financial irregularities had no impact on the care or services the hospital provides.

“The leadership of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is committed to the highest ethical behavior of all our employees, and our action in this matter affirms that commitment,” said the hospital’s chief executive officer, Steven Altschuler, MD, in the statement.

The hospital has referred the matter to the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and is deferring all comments while the investigation is active.

Hairston’s hospital biography says he is a 1990 graduate of Temple University Law School and received a Master’s of Laws degree in trial advocacy in 1997. His biography also states that he teaches at Temple University School of Law and at the university’s Fox School of Business. Hairston is also very active in community organizations – he was re-elected in December as chair of the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board - and has received a number of recognitions for his work in the community.
