When the merger of hospitals owned by Stanford University and the University of California at San Francisco dissolved in 2000, it was to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars and a lot of misery. Such failures are very rare say merger and acquisitions insiders.

When thieves cut a hole through the roof of Eli Lilly’s Enfield, Conn. warehouse on a Sunday in March 2010, they were able to rappel inside and fill tractor trailers full of anti-depressants and cancer-fighting drugs. The heist netted the thieves $75 million worth of goods and brought to the attention of the nation a problem that had been increasingly plaguing the pharmaceutical industry: the theft of pharmaceutical products by organized criminals.

Three of the nation's largest for-profit home health companies are "gaming" Medicare, concluded a report released Monday by the Senate Finance Committee. The report accuses Amedisys, LHC Group and Gentiva of intentionally increasing the number of their home health visits in order to plump their profits.

Complaints about nursing homes are rampant and general opinion about them is poor. It's well known that employees aren't happy at these facilities and turnover is high. Right? Maybe not so much, according to results of a customer and employee satisfaction survey from My InnerView, a division of the National Research Corporation.
